Dr. Ed Corboy injured his back while weight training for college athletics. Months later, a professional sports team physician told Ed it was the worst muscle and ligament back injury he had ever seen.
The years that followed the injury included three major back operations, intensive physical therapy, and rehabilitation. Ultimately, Ed overcame his injury, went on to graduate from Purdue University and then completed medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago.
During his recovery from his back injuries, Dr. Corboy began developing the reacher that was to become The Golden Retriever. His idea began as he tried to put on a pair of pants while wearing a body cast. His wallet fell to the floor and he had to kick it into the hospital hallway and ask a passerby to pick it up.
From that moment on, Ed Corboy was determined to create the perfect reacher. He made his first prototype from balsa wood and a paper tube. After experimenting with a variety of materials, linkages, and grip designs, he arrived at a unique design that was patented at the U.S. Patent Office.
Ed approached the design of The Golden Retriever from two key perspectives. First, he wanted to make a well made, precise and durable reacher that would help people of all ages reach up, reach down, or reach behind heavy objects or furniture. He saw a number of poorly made reachers that did not last. Second, he wanted to make a reacher that would be handy for all people to use for simple reaching needs around the home, office or yard.
The Golden Retriever is one of the most versatile and handy products you will ever own. It has hundreds of handy uses.
Dr. Ed Corboy has appeared as a guest on "The Oprah Winfrey Show",been featured on The NBC Today Show, and has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and on "Paul Harvey News." He lives and works in the Chicago area.
